Reconstruction Timeline
1865- Lincoln Assassination
•When Lincoln was assassinated, it ended his ten percent plan. He was shot by a southerner because he was a northern supporter. Lincoln was shot in the back of the head at Ford's Theater by John Wilkes Booth.
1865- Freedman's Bureau
• Because so many slaves were being freed, they had no where to go and no jobs, food, or shelter. Freedman's Bureau provided them with the things they needed with around 900 agents.
1866- Black Codes
•Johnson was in charge during this time, and he was a very stubborn slave-approving man. Because of this, he made black codes that prohibited slaves from renting property, owning guns, and working without contracts. Therefore, it was similar to slavery.
1866- The 14th Amendment
•This amendment gave more power back to Freedman's Bureau that was trying to be taken away. It was urged on by Radical Republicans who supported change in the south and saw that Johnson was taking that away.
1866- Civil Rights Act
•The civil Rights Act gave mostly the same rights and services as Freedman's Bureau. It was trying to abolish slavery and make African Americans and Whites equal. It was thought of because Johnson rejected the Freedman's Bureau bill. Johnson also tried to veto this, but was over-ruled.
1868- Seymour/Grant Election
•After being impeached, Johnson didn't run in the next election. Instead, Horatio Seymour ran for the democrats, and Grant for the republicans. Grant followed along with Lincoln's ideas, therefore the African Americans liked him better. But, the African Americans were not wanted in the voting polls. they were threatened with violence but they voted anyway. Because of them, Grant won the election.
